Honours even in evening kickoff
Maidenhead Utd drew first blood in the 2nd evening match played this week, with Tina Brett firing in a long range effort on 15 minutes to give the home side the advantage.
Saints played some good football but couldn't find a clean through ball to trouble the Utd defence and keeper. Both teams battled hard in midfield to maintain quality possession, but the game remained good natured despite the high tempo.
The first half ended with Maidenhead still 1-0 to the good.
Woodley Saints started the second half the brightest of the 2 teams, with Zoe Clifford and Amie Benton both causing problems for Utd. It was Benton who got the equaliser 10 minutes into the 2nd half when she beat the offside trap and slotted home. 5 minutes later Jess Grimmett gave Woodley the 2-1 lead to keep their Championship hopes afloat.
Utd upped their game in the last half hour, and Lucy Thomson went closest with a long range effort and a free kick that just sailed over the bar.
Maidenhead got their 2nd goal to equalise from a set piece - a free kick from the right was whipped across the 6 yard box, and defender Jade Pilley was there to head home on 70 minutes.
With the game tied at 2-2, the last 20 minutes begun to get scrappy with neither team seeming to take control of the match.
Despite some substitutions from both sides the game finished 2-2 and it leaves Saints unable to catch Uni of Portsmouth in the top spot.
Oxford Utd have the only mathematical chance to beat Uni of Portsmouth but they need to win all their matches and hope Portsmouth lose all of theirs.
There is now a 3 way tie for the runners up spot, the order should be settled within the next weekend with those 3 teams all playing their final matches.
