Exciting game at Ashville sees them through to Semi-Final of Cheshire Amateur Cup

The complete 1st Division programme fell victim to the weather leaving Ashville’s Cheshire Amateur cup tie against 2nd Division Capenhurst Villa as the high profile game of the day. An action packed encounter with the balance of play switching from one side to the other, eventually saw Ashville claiming the last semi-final place in this season’s competition thanks to a 4-1 extra time success. In a game switched to Villa Park, Capenhurst were the first to settle but their keeper Cameron Ringstead had to be alert to pluck the ball off the toes of Ashville’s Dave Rudge. With 13 minutes gone, the hosts had the ball in the net but Paul Howell was to be booked after using his hand to guide it there. Ringstead then saved a Josh Amiss effort while at the other end Luke Eccles shot wide when through on goal and Mike Banks had his shot saved by Aaron Kinnear in the home goal. The end to end encounter then saw the Villa defence having to scramble the ball clear but only as far as Jay Clare who fired over. A quick Villa break ended with Rob Dowell firing over and as the half drew to a close Ashville were forced to clear a corner off their line. But the final action of the 1st period was a defining one when Clare’s in swinging corner was met at the far post by Howell who sent a powerful header into the Capenhurst net. Boosted by their goal the hosts took up the early 2nd half running and forced a couple of corners, one of which required a goal line clearance but in response Banks fired over for Villa as did his striking partner Simon Thelwell. As the game reached its ¾ point, the pace understandably dropped with fewer chances resulting but with 7 minutes remaining Villa drew level when Banks, as Howell had done earlier, rose at the far post to head home. Shortly before the end the visitors almost netted again only for Kinnear to make a superb save to take the tie into extra time. On the restart Ashville were soon 2-1 in front when an excellent run and cross by Howell was met by Rudge whose fierce effort gave Ringstead no chance. To their credit the 2nd Division outfit fought back and full back Louis Walters fired over and Thelwell saw his powerful free kick tipped over by Kinnear. Within a minute of extra time’s 2nd period Ashville stretched their lead when Clare converted a penalty after Ringstead had brought down the hard working Howell. Five minutes remained when Amiss picked up a loose ball by the penalty spot and calmly dispatched the ball into the net to give Ashville a 4-1 victory that didn’t really do justice to a Capenhurst outfit who played their full part in an entertaining encounter. In the semi-finals Ashville will face Manchester League side Stockport Georgians with Cammell Laird Reserves taking on Vauxhall Motors Reserves in the other tie. Both games will be held at neutral venues.
Capenhurst’s cup outing allowed Richmond Raith Rovers Mags to retake top spot in Division 2 following their 7-0 eclipse of Beb Athletic. The Rovers’ hot shots have now found the net 68 times in 19 league outings and Saturday’s marksmen were headed by Jay O’Donnell with a 4 goal haul. Ally Birmingham, Chris Evans and a Brad Thompson penalty completed the tally. Gateacre Village continue their meteoric rise up the table and they now occupy 3rd spot after their 10-0 demolition of Mersey Royal. Sam Gainer, Kieran Owens and Jordan Whelan claimed doubles which were supplemented by Ian Lewis, Anthony Scotland, Curtis Owens and Joe Connelly. Manor Athletic fell further behind in the promotion race after Dave Hughes, Chris Nation and Mike McGinn struck for Maghull Reserves in a 3-1 verdict that saw Tom Carroll net for the visitors. Helsby also dropped points after sharing the spoils at Marshalls who had Dale Hodge countering Matt Johnston’s strike for the away side. Sam Gifford was 2 a goal man for Prescot Cables Reserves but opponents Willaston garnered a useful away point thanks to strikes by Andy Noonan and Billy New.
Division 3 table toppers Rainhill Town notched their 91st goal of the campaign when overcoming Christleton Reserves 5-0. The League’s leading marksman Matt Dooling was again on target when bagging a brace, Dan Leather also found the net twice with Colin Lynch completing the total. Hale Reserves held a 2-0 interval lead over visiting Chester Nomads Reserves before eventually edging home by the odd goal in five. Tom Askew, Colin Mee and Jack Walker struck for Hale with Alan Bond and a goal counting for Nomads. It was all square at Kirby Town Railway who had John Humphreys on target against Neston Nomads whose Sean Harrod goal in the dying minutes earned them a welcome point in their bid to escape the Division’s lower reaches. After suffering a 13-0 hammering a week earlier, Belfry commendably dug deep to claim a refreshing 3-2 victory over Marshalls Reserves. Mark Brady underpinned the success with a double which was added to by Tom Seddon as Danny Forrester and Tom Pepper replied for Marshalls.
