MATCH ROUND UP W/E 11th DECEMBER 2010

An inspired goalkeeping display by Ellesmere Port custodian Robbie McLaughlin wasn’t enough to prevent opponents Maghull clinching a 2-1 victory that took them to the top of Carlsberg West Cheshire Division 1. A string of superb saves by McLaughlin kept the result in doubt until the final whistle. Having taken a 1st minute lead Maghull dominated the opening half without adding to their advantage. On the resumption an improved Port leveled just before the hour mark when Mark Jones blasted home a free kick. Maghull’s efforts to retake the lead were largely being foiled by McLaughlin but it was the influential Lee Tynan who finally made the breakthrough and despite a few late scares the Liverpool outfit emerged victorious. Blacon YC remain rooted to the foot of the table after their 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Vauxhall Motors Reserves who netted through Tom Roberts, Phil Coffin, Mark Ryan and Ali Asgari. Upton AA’s had 2 goal man in Steve Rowland who spearheaded their 2-1 victory over Cammell Laird Reserves [Alex White] while Willaston ended a turbulent few weeks on a happy note when Paul Ellison netted twice as they overcame Marine Reserves [Paul Pearson], 2-1.
Elsewhere in a reduced programme West Kirby edged through to the last 8 of the Cheshire Amateur Cup as Terry Cotgrave and Adam Lea were on target with an own goal counting for opponents Christleton. Colin McDonald, Eric Woodward and Mike Kelly registered for Southport Trinity as they triumphed by the odd goal in 5 at Old Xaverians while in another Liverpool Challenge Cup tie 2nd Division Mossley Hill Athletic [Barry Coventry 2 Simon Ellison] progressed by 3 goals to 1 at the expense of 1st Division Marshalls [John McGovern].
There was a major shock in the Haworth and Gallagher Bowl when Division 2 leaders Chester Nomads were defeated on penalties by struggling Heswall Reserves. Earlier the sides had shared 6 goals with player manager John Cadwallader,2, and Mark Crossen posting for Nomads while Iain Colligan, Owen Davies and veteran Gordon Harrison responded for the visitors. Feature of Ashville’s 7-1 thrashing of Prescot Cable Reserves was a hat trick by substitute Jamie Locke who only took the field mid way through the 2nd half. Before the break a quick fire double from Ross Rule had helped Ashville to a 4-1 interval advantage. Also through to the semi finals are Capenhurst Villa [Steve Morgan,2, Ryan Nicholl] who saw off Bronze Social [Lewis Wright, Tom Harris] 3-2.
In Division 2 New Brighton’s promotion bid faltered when Paul Howell’s effort was cancelled out by Ian Hobday of West Kirby Reserves. A Leigh Carter strike was enough for Manor Athletic to end Ashville Reserves interest in the Complete Focus Shield while Marshalls Reserves had a hat trick hero in Ollie Roberts as they enjoyed a 5-0 win at Opal in the Liverpool Intermediate Cup. The only Division 3 encounter went the way of Merseyside Police who had two goal men in Daley Woods and Tony Hill as they crushed Helsby Reserves thanks to a 6-1 victory.
Halewood Town maintained their strong bid for the Youth Division title when they ran out 8-1 winners against South Liverpool with a Dave Worsley treble being the highlight while Millennium [Mike Murphy, Ali Tarabiea, Luke Charlesworth] overcame Runcorn Town [Rob Shearer], 3-1.
