On Saturday the first of the Basingstoke Saturday League Cup Finals is being played, when Basingstoke Athletic will play Herriard Sports.in the Final of the Basingstoke B Cup, at the Winklebury Football Complex Kick off 6.30 p.m.
On paper Athletic should be firm favourites, with their former Welly Old Boys players in the line up and having beaten their opponents in both league matches, however when they met in the North Hants May Cup in November Herriard won 5-4 after extra time, so their could be an upset. To reach the Final; Herriard had a bye in the first round, won 4-2 against Winklebury Wizards in the Quarter Final and in the Semi Final won 3-1 against Basingstoke United. Basingstoke Athletic had a bye in the First Round. In the Quarter Finals they won 1-0 against Bounty United and in the Semi Final beat Preston Candover 5-2.
Rising Sun DC won through to the Final of the Peter Raynbird Cup after beating Tadley Calleva A 2-1 at Barlows Park. They now wait for the result of the other Semi final, being played on Saturday between Hook and Sherborne St John. Tadley were far from full strength with regulars not available, but felt they should have received a penalty early in the game when Steve Aldridge went down in the box. It was however Rising Sun taking the lead after 15 minutes when a shot from the edge of the box by Joe Harris proved too good for the keeper. The Tadley defenders kept it at 1-0 until the 75th minute when a free kick taken by Michael Thomas sailed into the net from 30 yards out. Tadley did stage a brief comeback with eight minutes to go when Kye Theodore won the ball some 18 yards out and scored with decent shot on the turn, but no further danger to the visitors goal.
