WEST CHESHIRE AFL REPORT – WEEKENDING SATURDAY 27 MARCH 2011

The pairing for the end of season Pyke Cup Final is now known. Maghull will take on Newton at Vauxhall Motor’s Rivacre Park on Friday 6 May 2011. Maghull, with a very real chance of claiming a West Cheshire double of cup and league title, overcame a well drilled Ellesmere Port in their semi-final by two goals to one. Once again Tome Foley and Lee Tynan were the heroes for Maghull with Peter McNulty replying for Port. Newton ran out convincing 0-2 winners at Willaston thanks to Lee Kissock and Jack Morgan. Willaston had a number of chances to make an impact on the game but could not convert any of them. As often happens, Newton host Maghull in the league next Saturday (5 April).

Maghull will have been further cheered with the news of West Kirby’s 2-2 draw at Christleton. Steve Finlay claimed both Christleton goals with the Deesiders scoring through John Johnson and Dave Forbes. West Kirby now find themselves six points behind first placed Maghull. Although they have two games in hand on the North Liverpool side, Maghull currently have a far superior goal difference. So it is all eyes on their forthcoming clash at the end of April. Southport Trinity continued their fine run when they swept aside Heswall by three goals to one, thanks to Carl Ennis, Eric Woodward and Callum Kelly. This result followed a good point gained at Vauxhall Motors Reserves in a midweek tie that ended one all. Again Eric Woodward scored for Trinity with the ever impressive Jordan Brierley ensuring Vauxhalls did not go way empty handed. In Saturday’s one remaining division one fixture, Cammell Lairds Reserves went down at home to Marine Reserves by the odd goal in five. Laird’s scored through George Mboa and Charlie McGuinness and with Marine’s Brad Foster getting two goals the hosts could have done without conceding an own goal to give the visitors all three points.

Chester Nomads will be hugely disappointed that their scheduled game at home to Bronze Social was postponed given that Mossley Hill Athletic’s (Paul McNeill and Simon Ellison) 0-2 win at Mallaby meant that the Liverpool side leapfrogged Nomads into second place in the league. Ashville continue to sweep all before them. This time Hale (Paul Hart) were the victims losing 1-3 at home to the top placed side. Ashville’s goals came via Chris Barrow, Dave Rudge and Danny Edwards. Fourth placed New Brighton (Neil Ashurst, Kyle Birch) drew 2-2 at Prescot Cables Reserves (Ruan Cannon, Rob Morgan).

The Youth Division continues to serve up top quality football. Ellesmere Port Juniors looked set pull off something of a shock when they went 2-0 (Greg Killen, Andy Jones) up at home to Runcorn Linnets Youth. However, goals from Danny Hesketh and James Rigby meant Linnets went home with a point. In another great tussle Hale Youth (Spencer Douglas, Brad Williams 2, Sean Carlson) went four one up at home to Mayfield Youth. However Mayfield claimed a share of the spoils in a thrilling come back to draw 4-4 thanks to a hat trick for Connor McCarthy and a single from Mike Owens. The performance of the day goes to table toppers, Maghull Youth who thrashed Runcorn Town 8-0. A hat trick form Mike Cummins and a brace by Dave Norbury alongside singles from Kierron Brislen, Jordan Lorde and Frannie Smith did the damage.
