In one of the shock results of the season, Ashville went down to a 2-0 Pyke Cup semi final reversal at the hands of an Ellesmere Port side they had defeated 8-0 just a few weeks earlier. Men on the mark for the jubilant winners were Colin O’Hanlon and Mark Price who converted a penalty. Port’s opponents in the final will be current holders Maghull who took the lead against Vauxhall Motors Reserves on the stroke of half time and went on to complete a 3-0 victory. Man of the Match was Lee Tynan who, as well as finding the net himself, also laid on a double for Mike Cummins. Heswall and Cammell Laird Reserves will contest this season’s Cheshire Amateur Cup final after they each recorded 2-0 victories in the all-West Cheshire semi finals. A 2nd minute Matty Johnson strike set Heswall on the road to victory against West Kirby on Tuesday and this was supplemented in the 2nd half by Richie Foulkes. On the following evening Jamie Kenyon was a 1st half marksman for Lairds as they saw off Chester Nomad’s challenge with a late John Wheadon spot kick cementing their success.
In Division 1 at the weekend Marshalls lifted themselves off the foot of the table when John Connolly netted the game’s only goal in their local derby with Mossley Hill Athletic. Dropping to bottom slot are Willaston who went down 3-1 at home to a Chester Nomads side who went in front midway through the 2nd period courtesy of Dale Harris. An own goal in Nomad’s favour followed and although Willaston reduced the arrears through Trevor Worsley, Nomads quickly restored their 2 goal margin via Edd Moss. Cammell Laird Reserves [Colin Smith] remain in the lower regions after losing 2-1 to visitors Southport Trinity [Andy Vernon, Eric Woodward] and hot shot Ronnie Morgan bagged both of Christleton’s goals as they overcame fading West Kirby [Terry Cotgrave] 2-1, Dave Thompson converted a penalty for Newton who were later reduced to 10 men and then surrendered 2 points as opponents Heswall’s substitute Matty Johnson hit a late equalizer. Biggest divisional winners of the day were Marine Reserves who had Carl Burquist, Steve Gale, Brad Fisher and Mike Brown obliging in their 4-0 win over Blacon YC.
Division 2 strugglers Heswall Reserves had Gordon Harrison, 2, Matty Holt and Dominic Holden posting as they emerged as surprise 4-3 winners at promotion seeking Hale [Ian Carlson, 2, Paul Hart]. New Brighton [Pat O’Sullivan, 2, Paul Lindfield, James Carey, Danny McGill] stayed in contention after running out easy 5-0 winners over Bronze Social but Prescot Cables Reserves [Lee Owens, Sam Gifford] had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Richmond Raith Rovers [Rob Madine, 2,]. Eddie Toner, John Hodges and Christian Stuart were on the mark as Mallaby overcame basement boys Marshalls Reserves 3-0 and Capenhurst Villa [Alan Locke, Mark Ryan] shared 4 goals with West Kirby Reserves [Chris Bowe, Dave Swayne].
South Liverpool [Patrick O’Hanlon, Sean Davies] maintain a 13 point lead at the top of Division 3 but had to fight all the way for their latest success before edging out hosts Upton AA Reserves [Ryan Brown] 2-1. Second placed Helsby had matters more to their liking as Wes Huizer again led the way with a treble when getting the better of struggling Hale Reseves, 6-1. Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves [Phil Duncan, Sam Grainger, Tom Moore] were odd goal in 5 victors over Mersey Royal [Mark Gray, John Strange] and Martin Coan, Jack Rowland, and Alex Clare were all on target as Neston Nomads secured a welcome 3-1 success at the expense of Christleton Reserves.
Youth Division leaders Maghull [Jay Walsh, Adam Wilkinson] slumped to a surprising 5-2 defeat at Hale who had Kieran Parker as a hat trick star and Lee Tuckington was another three goal hero in Runcorn Linnets 6-2 victory at Widnes Town.
