Congratulations go to Ashville who wrapped up their first Division 1 title in 44 years by overcoming hosts Heswall, 2-0, on Wednesday. The new champions had to wait until the early stages of the 2nd half before breaking through a determined home defence when Danny Edwards smashed the ball into the net. Lee Hammond’s late penalty sealed a victory that saw Jason Aldcroft’s side complete a historic achievement by becoming Division 1 title winners just 12 months after securing the Division 2 title. The title race having been decided, attention on Saturday was centered on the battle to avoid relegation. With just two sides below them, Cammell Laird Reserves visited Mossley Hill Athletic where the teams fought out a goal less 1st period. Nine minutes after the break, Barry Coventry put Athletic in front and almost immediately Tom Moore doubled the advantage with a fine individual effort. Soon after the hour mark John Paul Wheadon pulled one back for the visitors and although Athletic keeper Colin Griffiths then saved a Lairds penalty, the visitors salvaged a welcome point when, with time running out, Wheadon netted a second. Bottom side Willaston also had to be content with a point as they and hosts Upton AA blanked each other out but Marshalls remain just one place above them after going down to a 2-0 defeat at Heswall who had Gordon Harrison and Dominic Holden registering. Ellesmere Port need to take reward from their games in hand if they are to steer clear of trouble after going down 4-1 at Marine Reserves. Rob Doran, Mike Brown, Steve Gale and Phil Ferguson were on target for The Mariners, who now lie 2nd in the table, while Mark Price hit Port’s consolation. A double from Ian Morrison featured as Southport Trinity gained maximum reward with a 2-1 win at Vauxhall Motors Reserves [Christian Banasko] and Ryan O’Hare also struck twice as Christleton maintained their revival thanks to a 3-1 triumph over Newton. Chester Nomads continue to enjoy their 1st ever campaign in Division 1 and Ilya Hancock and Kieran Smith each found the net when gaining their 2-0 verdict over Maghull.
Only Hale of the 3 major promotion candidates in Division 2 were in action and they returned to the top of the table courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Capenhurst Villa. Diminutive striker Paul Hart led the way with a hat trick which was supplemented by Martin Ho. Prescot Cable Reserves [Ashton Gibiliru, Jacob Bastisa, Jonathon Sproson] kept their faint hopes alive following their 3-2 triumph over strugglers Marshalls Reserves [John McGovern, Danny Yates] Mallaby [Jordan Costello, Gerard Mullen] overcame local rivals Manor Athletic [Tom Mole] 2-1, while Maghull Reserves [Baqar Pavas] drew 1-1 with Ashville Reserves [Lee Healey].
South Liverpool and Helsby moved closer to their goal of 2nd Division football next season when they each recorded a 2-0 success. Nial McHale bagged a brace as South got the better of Beb Athletic Reserves while on a nearby pitch Helsby had Tom Smith and Adam Hunter on target against Mersey Royal. At the other end of the table, Hale Reserves had Spencer Douglas and Andy Cashmore posting when sharing 4 goals with fellow strugglers Ellesmere Port Reserves and it was the same scoreline as two more of the bottom 4 sides met with Dean Jones and Kevin Jackson netting for Neston Nomads while Connor Murphy and Kyle Smith did likewise for Manor Athletic Reserves.
Congratulations go to Lower Breck Boys who reached their 2nd cup final of the season when overcoming Finn Harps, 4-1, in the semi final of the Bill Graham Youth Plate. Andy Hardy, Matty Howard, Johnny Nado and Ryan Gilboy struck for Lower Breck with Connor McCarthy replying for Harps. There was a plethora of goals as league leaders Maghull garnered 3 more points when running out 9-4 winners over Runcorn Linnets.
This Friday, two Carlsberg West Cheshire sides, Cammell Laird Reserves and Heswall meet in the Cheshire Amateur Cup final at Vauxhall Motors FC, kick off 7.00 p.m.
