Round Up 23 October 2010
CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUND UP WEEK ENDING 23 October 2010
Division One had a lighter look to it this weekend with most sides involved in the second round of the Cheshire Amateur Cup. Consequently, in the only top flight league game of the day, Maghull were able to increase the pressure on first placed West Kirby when they took on Newton at Old Hall Field. The home side did not miss out on the opportunity running out winners by two gals to one. Sam Wilkie and Ryan Stamper secured the points for Maghull, who now stand just two points behind West Kirby in second place and have played one game less. Kieron Fleetwood replied for Newton.
West Cheshire sides again proved to be worthy opponents in the Cheshire County FA Amateur Cup. Pride of place has to go to second division side, Ashville, who tore apart Cheshire League side, Mellor, 7-0! The Villa Park faithful were treated to two goals each from Dave Rudge, Danny Edwards and Lee Bridge, with Andy Kingham claiming the odd goal. Bronze Social will have restored pride having finally won a game, albeit after extra-time and a penalty shoot-out at home to Manor Athletic. Perhaps the surprise of the day was that West Kirby only managed a 0-1 win and lowly second division side, Capenhurst Villa, Lawrence Reilly ensuring the Deesiders progression. Christleton did exceptionally well to beat high flying Helsby by two goals to one. Andy Rowntree and Lee Butterworth cancelling out a strike form John McEvoy. Chester Nomads put in an impressive performance to win at much fancied Cheshire League side, Styal by three goal to two after extra time. The glory boys for Nomads were Ed Moss, John Cadwallader and Ryan Butcher. Meanwhile Ellesmere Port claimed a fine 0-4 win at Upton AA thanks to a hat trick from Mark Price that included two penalties. Mike Jones claimed the fourth.
The final tie of the first round of Haworth & Gallagher Bowl matches took place on Saturday when Heswall Reserves took on Mossley Hill Athletic at Gayton Park. Despite a late start to the game, Mossley Hill dominated the game when, against the run of play, Heswall broke down the left side and Robbie Oates hit fierce shot into the goal leaving the visiting keeper with no chance of saving the shot. Just two minutes later, Mossley Hill were left reeling when Owen Davies netted from close range. With a real uphill challenge in front of them it was all credit to Mossley Hill who took the game by the scruff of the neck and clawed a goal back early in the second half. However the visitors were left to rue a string of missed chances as they did everything but score the equaliser. A late missed penalty proved not to be costly to the home side who progressed in to the second round where they will visit a strong Chester Nomad side.
The Youth League competition is proving to be a fascinating event this season with four Liverpool sides vying for top spot in the early months of the season. Maghull Youth are emulating their senior side and are currently in first place having won 0-4 at League new boys, Neston Nomads. Jake Frampton, Adam Wilkinson, Jordon Lorde and Jack Edwards did the damage for the visitors. Second placed Halewood Town may have been disappointed by only drawing at home to Helsby Youth 2-2. However they will hope for better in the coming weeks and to maximise the return form the two games they have in hand on Maghull. Conor OShea and David Worsley were the home side scorers with Helsbys George McGrogan and Alex Hale replying for the visitors. In difficult, windy conditions, Belfry took the lead at Ellesmere Port Juniors with a long range effort on 20 minutes from Sam Ennis. However Port drew level just five minutes later thanks to Matty Edwards. Within three minutes of the start of the second half, Belfry and Sam Ennis netted a second goal following a weak parry from the Port keeper. Despite a disallowed effort for the home side, Belfry finally ran out as winners by two goals to one
