Mansfield Hosiery Mills stitch up Division 2 Title
Midland Amateur Alliance Report for 14 April
No change at the top of the Premier Division as the top six all won their matches. Doubles from Sam Dilkes and Luke Slaney together with goals from Joe Gent, Paul Burton and Sam Potter went unanswered by Brunts Old Boys in a 7 0 victory for leaders Ilkeston Rutland. Following their midweek 1 1 draw with Radcliffe Olympic III, Steelers suffered a 3 0 defeat against second placed Old Elizabethans whose marksmen were Andy Boulton, Michael Bollington and Calum Wilkinson. Third placed Beeston AFC II secured a 3 1 victory over bottom of the Table Wollaton III who were hit by a Paul Brooks double and a goal from Sam Mannion. Paul Reddington was Woodborough Uniteds sole marksman in their 4 2 defeat of Trent Vineyard whose reply came from Matt Waring and Ben Lake. Meanwhile Sherwood Colliery defeated Southwell St Marys II by the same score with Jason Lilliman, Jordan Fletcher, Nathan Walters and Eden Homer making up their goal tally. Coronation pipped Beeston OBA by the odd goal in five thanks to a James Whitmore double and a Joe Parker strike but this victory will be scant reward for the team after their unfortunate experience in the midweek Senior Cup Final in which they were leading 1 0 against Ilkeston Rutland when the game was called off at half time due to a waterlogged pitch.
Division 1 Champions elect Bassingfield suffered a fright against their old rivals Lady Bay who lead 3 0 at half time before goals from Kyle Young, Frazer White, John Rosie and Liam Brady lead to a 4 3 turnabout. Rainworth Rangers retain a mathematical chance of claiming the Title after pipping Wollaton IV 2 1 with Kyle Sargeant and Calum Lucas their goal scorers. A double from Billy ONeill and goals from Tim Gregory and Mike Smedley earned Sherwood Colliery II back to back 4 2 victories over Broadmeadows, whose reply came from two Craig Greaves penalties. Third placed FC Interski were held to a 2 2 draw by Eaton Hall College whose marksmen were Tom Handley and John Morris. New Houghton Villa could find no reply to John Fosters solitary strike for Cotmanhay whilst Nottinghamshire III might still avoid the wooden spoon after defeating next to bottom Southwell St Marys III 2 1.
Mansfield Hosiery Mills won the Division 2 Championship in their last match of the season thanks to their 7 0 triumph over Cambridge Knights who were hit by four goals from Ashley Swain and a hat-trick from Darren Bettison. Old Elizabethans II claimed the Runners-Up spot after defeating Old bemrosians 4 0 with Danny Whiting netting a brace and Ryan Armstrong and Craig Page completing the tally. Goals from Duncan Bennett and Gavin Haynes for Magdala Amateurs A went unanswered by Ashfield FC who finished their league matches shielded from the bottom spot by Nottinghamshire IV who pipped Town Mill 2 1.
