MATCH ROUND UP WEEK ENDING 25 September 2010

With table-toppers, Maghull, and second placed West Kirby out of League action due to County Cup commitments, the Division One focus fell on their near rivals to gain some ground on the early season leaders.

Helsby would have fancied their chances at lowly placed Christleton and their visit to the Little Heath ground did not disappoint as they ran out 0-2 winners, thanks to Danny Davies and Gary Tyrell. Two clubs hoping to make their mark this season met at Heswall’s Gayton Park when Frankby based side Newton were the visitors. In what turned out to be a disappointingly drab encounter, Newton snatched all three points with a goal apiece for Kieron Fleetwood and Lee Kissock. Upton AA have really turned their fortunes around this term following a desperately poor showing last year. Looking more like the side that ran West Kirby all the way two seasons ago, Upton are nicely place in sixth position having gained their fourth league win of the season, 1-0 at home to Ellesmere Port. Derek Rogers won the plaudits for the Chester outfit. Cammell Lairds would like to ‘rip it up and start again’ this season. The reigning champions would have looked at the rearranged home game with Blacon YC as the perfect opportunity to register their first win and move away from the bottom of the league. However, despite Sean Crosbie’s goal, Blacon proved that they were not to be denied as Matty Pierce goal ensured a 1-1 draw. Both teams continue to languish in the relegation places. In the one remaining Division One game, Vauxhall Motors continued to show significant progress under manager, Alan Schumacher, winning 0-2 at Willaston’s Recreation ground. Sean Keevey and Phil Coffin were the heroes for the Motormen.

Division two is fast becoming a two-horse race with pre-season favourites, Ashville and last season’s nearly men, Chester Nomads seeming to claim all before them. However Ashville are not having things all their own way, leading Nomads by goal difference, having played one game more.

The Villa Park outfit were able to reverse a recent blip in form by producing an impressive win at Maghull Reserves by three goals to one. Steve Platt’s men claimed all three points thanks to the goals of Danny Edwards, Dave Rudge and Dave Huyton, a recent acquisition from Cammell Lairds. Meanwhile Chester Nomads entertained Ashville’s near neighbours, New Brighton. Nomads were always in command of the game and it was no surprise when Mark Crossan put them 1-0 up. However, the Raker’s Kyle Birch had other ideas and claimed an equaliser. Despite being held 1-1 at half-time, Nomads were well worth the three points, running out 3-2 winners. Martin Gaulton and Kieron Smith secured the points for the Garrison Ground side. New Brighton’s second was claimed by Gary Knight. Mallaby would have been disappointed not have taken something from the game at Capenhurst Villa losing 1-0 to a Graeme Davidson goal. Consequently Mossley Hill Athletic were able to close the gap on Mallaby by beating West Kirby Reserves 3-0. Goals from Yusef Malik, Simon Ellison and James Halligan claimed the spoils for the Liverpool side. Prescot Cables Reserves were certainly expecting a far better season than they have had so far. Just two point above the relegations placings, Cables fell at home again, this time 1-4 to Heswall Reserves. John Clough’s goal was poor consolation in reply to scores from Gordon Harrison, Andy Brown, Dave Burton and Iain Colligan. Bronze Social’s poor form continued as they succumbed 3-1 at AFC Bebington Athletic with Sean Heggarty claiming the days only hat trick. Dave Woods replied for Bronze.

The Third Division produced the performance of the day as league leaders; Manor Athletic swept aside Capenhurst Villa Reserves 7-0. Two goals apiece from Chris Tulley, Phil Evans and Leigh Carter together with a goal from Lewis Hough ensured a near perfect start continued for Manor. However Manor are being pushed all the way by Runcorn Linnets Reserves who claimed their eight win of the season, 2-4 at Ashville Reserves. Linnets Peter Murphy, Dave Walker and Josh Smith added to an own goal. Ashville’s reply came from John Duddy and Alan McDonnell.
