Christleton move up after local derby win

The weather was again the winner with only 3 games escaping its’ clutches in Saturday’s programme. A local derby was on offer in Chester with Division 1 bottom club Upton AA playing host to a Christleton side who themselves had dropped into the bottom 3 and were looking for their 1st league success in 7 outings. Early pressure from Upton was dealt with by a Christleton defence well marshalled throughout by Anthony Mills and it was the visitors who were to go in front in the 9th minute when George Rogers slotted home from close range. Nathan Mapletoft had a chance to level matters for Upton but fired over the bar. The hosts were enjoying the greater possession but with a variable wind at their backs were guilty of over hitting their forward passes. There had been little in the way attacking threat from Christleton since their goal but in the 25th minute a reckless tackle by an Upton defender saw Josh Williams confidently convert the resultant spot kick. In response a neat turn and shot from Mapletoft was saved by Christleton keeper Gary Simester but 5 minutes before the break the diminutive striker reduced the arrears when he was on the end of an Owen Kelsey pass to slip the ball into the net. Shortly after the resumption, Christleton took a 3-1 lead when Adam Thelwell-Wilson drilled the ball home following a smooth flowing move. On the hour mark it almost became 4-1 only for Lee Butterworth’s powerful drive to smack against the bar and although the visitors were doing most of the attacking, Chris Melia had one effort saved by Greg Simester. But with 17 minutes remaining he was more successful when he diverted the ball into the Christleton net following a free kick. Christleton almost immediately restored their two goal advantage only for Thelwell-Wilson’s lobbed effort over home custodian Adam Bedford to be cleared off the line by an Upton defender. Four minutes were left on the clock when Thelwell Wilson put the game out of the hosts’ reach by latching onto a Rogers pass and converting with ease. Full time was reached with Christleton recording a 4-2 score line, a welcome success that their 2nd half play deserved. An hour prior to the kick off, a thunderstorm, complete with hailstones, had left the pitch a sheet of white and although these had disappeared when the game commenced, the conditions throughout, when coupled with a strong wind, were extremely tricky. It was to the credit of both sides then that such an entertaining encounter was witnessed, although that will be of little consolation to an Upton outfit who remain at the foot of the table.


Prior to the Hale v Blacon Youth Club game Manager of the Month for December Jim Doran of Hale was presented with his Carlsberg pack of beer and tankard by League Official Ged Kinsey.

The ‘kiss of death’ of receiving the Manager of the Month did not materialize as another Chester side, Blacon Youth Club, were hit by a “Hale storm” of a different nature when going down to a 6-0 defeat at Jimmy Doran’s 2nd placed side. Hale led 3-0 at the interval and soon after the re-start, a successful penalty by Josh Doyle was the trigger for a repeat 3 goal margin in the 2nd period. A double by Wayne Smith saw him join South Liverpool’s Cameron Dalton at the top of the Division 1 scoring charts with 20 goals each. Sean Wright was another two goal man for the hosts and the scoring was completed by Carl Latham. Hale’s 7th consecutive victory keeps them firmly in 2nd place but still some 18 points behind clear leaders Maghull, and with 2 games in hand.
The Division 2 programme was completely wiped out but, making full use of their G4 pitch, Rainhill Town’s game with promotion rivals St Helens Town Reserves went ahead as planned in Division 3. It was the visitors who drew first blood courtesy of a Kyle Ross strike but Town hit back to edge the first period, 2-1. The 2nd half was a more one sided affair with the league leaders eventually running out 5-1 winners. Dan Leather was the star man for Town by bagging a hat trick, Dave Monteith also netted and Matt Dooling claimed his 30th goal of an outstanding campaign.
