Maghull spurned an opportunity to reduce the gap at the top of Division 1 when going down to a single goal defeat at Newton who moved up into 3rd place as a result of their success. With visiting keeper Ian Lowe having to leave the field due to a finger injury inside the opening 5 minutes a scrappy encounter was decided in the 70th minute when newly introduced Newton substitute James Lunden fired home following good work by Jamie Hannah. In midweek leaders Ashville suffered a 3-1 home reversal at the hands of a well organized Marine Reserves outfit who held a 1-0 interval lead through Peter Donnelly. The same player went on to double the advantage and although Paul Howell threw Ashville a lifeline Paul Pearson added a 3rd for Marine who also had a spot kick saved. Strikes from Aiden Shannon and Luke Hughes hauled back a 2 goal deficit for Blacon YC as they finished all square with West Kirby whose Josh Hughes was on the scoresheet while Andy Lloyd, Stuart Denham and the prolific Simon Andrews were the men on the mark as Upton AA notched up a welcome 3-1 win at Southport Trinity [Callum Kelly]. Despite efforts from Stuart McMullen and Dave Forbes Heswall’s winning run came to an abrupt halt at Marshalls whose 4-2 success arrived courtesy of Richard Jones, 2, James Nilson and John Shakeshaft and Mossley Hill Athletic also gained maximum reward after Barry Coventry and Bryan Little netted against a Christleton side unable to muster a reply. Josh Williams posted twice and Josh Roberts also netted as Willaston fought out a 3-3 draw with Vauxhall Motors Reserves [Chris Cairns, Danny Reed, Mark Winslade] while Cammell Laird Reserves and Chester Nomads blanked each other out at Kirklands. Ashville bounced back from midweek defeat to ease into round 3 of the Cheshire Amateur Cup at the expense of Styal as Lee Hammond, 2, Dave Rudge, Chris Barrow and Mark Howell all netted in a 5-0 victory.
A Paul Hart double couldn’t prevent fancied Hale bowing out of the Haworth and Gallagher Bowl at the first attempt when Manor Athletic [Graham Williams, Chris Tolley]
forced a penalty shoot out which they won 7-6 and Marshall Reserves progressed by the same method after battling to a 0-0 draw at Maghull Reserves. Prescott Cables Reserves were grateful to 2 goal Yablans Williams as they edged out Richmond Raith Rovers [Own Goal] 2-1. Lloyd Ithell and Graham Carvell each bagged a brace as Beb Athletic shaded a 7 goal thriller with neighbours Bronze Social [Lee Dermody, 2, Jay Thompson] in Division 2 and Mallaby [Alex Broadbent, Paul Grimwood, Ben Davies] picked up their second win of the season when overcoming fellow strugglers West Kirby Reserves [Keith Lewis], 3-1. A Nick Cushing goal was enough for Capenhurst Villa to get the better of Heswall Reserves while promotion chasing Runcorn Linnets Reserves and New Brighton had to be content with a point apiece from a 2-2 draw.
The top Complete Focus Shield 1st round tie went the way of Helsby whose Jamie McCartney and John Toner were the backbone of their side’s 2-0 triumph over South Liverpool but Mersey Royal lost out on penalties after drawing 2-2 with Merseyside Police. There were single goal victories for Belfry [Liam Langley] and Ellesmere Port Reserves [Matty Singleton] against Manor Athletic Reserves and Capenhurst Villa Reserves respectively while a Danny Nevin brace steered Beb Athletic Reserves to a 2-1 verdict over Chester Nomads Reserves. Spencer Douglas and Neil Skidmore led the way as improving Hale Reserves edged New Brighton Reserves out of the competition thanks to a 2-1 win.
Spare a thought for Callum Evans who was a 5 goal star for Runcorn Town Youth but still didn’t finish on the winning side as Town drew 6 all with Hale who had Bradley Williams as a hat trick hero while Sharif Yusuf claimed a double for 2nd placed South Liverpool as they enjoyed a 4-2 success at Finn Harps.
